Aventura Transportation Guide: Airports, Hotels, Shopping, and Private Rides

Aventura sits between Miami and Fort Lauderdale — close to three airports, none of them "the" airport. Here's how to get in, where the hotels sit relative to the mall, and when a private chauffeur is worth it over a rideshare.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) is the closest major airport to Aventura at roughly 10-14 miles, about 15-25 minutes without traffic. Miami International (MIA) is about 18-22 miles, 25-40 minutes. Palm Beach's airport is the farthest useful option at around 55 miles, 55-70 minutes. A Brightline station has served Aventura since December 2022. Most visitors stay at or near the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa or one of the mid-market hotels clustered within a mile of Aventura Mall — which matters, because "close to the mall" and "close to the beach" are not the same trip here.

Where Aventura sits

A city built between two counties' worth of airports

Aventura is a small, dense city — about 2.6 square miles carrying roughly 40,000 residents, incorporated on November 7, 1995. Development goes back to the early 1970s, when developers Don Soffer and Eddie Lewis chose the name Aventura, Spanish for "adventure."

Geographically it's boxed in tightly: Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach across the Intracoastal to the east, North Miami Beach to the south, Hallandale Beach (Broward County) directly north, and Biscayne Boulevard (US-1) along the west edge running toward Downtown Miami one direction and Fort Lauderdale the other.

Onyx operational note

Aventura pickups split into two different jobs — condo tower valet/lobby pickups on the east side near the Intracoastal, and hotel/mall pickups on the west side near Biscayne Boulevard. Confirming which side a client is on before dispatch avoids a wasted loop through Aventura Boulevard traffic.

Which airport should you choose?

All three work. Choose based on your flight.

AirportDistance to AventuraTypical drive time (no traffic)Best for
FLL — Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood~10-14 miles15-25 minutesMost travelers — usually the shortest, least congested option
MIA — Miami International~18-22 miles25-40 minutesInternational flights, more airline and route choices
PBI — Palm Beach International~53-56 miles55-70 minutesLimited cases — only worth it for a specific fare or nonstop route

Distances and times are third-party road-distance estimates (Travelmath, Rome2Rio, distance-cities.com), not official airport data — actual drive time depends heavily on I-95 and Biscayne Boulevard traffic. Onyx logs real trip times on these routes and will update this table with its own data.

The practical rule: if two flights are close in price and schedule, FLL will almost always get you to Aventura faster than MIA, since it's closer and avoids most of the Golden Glades interchange traffic that backs up MIA-bound routes during rush hour. MIA is worth the extra time for international arrivals, given its far greater long-haul and international service.

Brightline

The train option

Aventura has had its own Brightline station since it opened on December 24, 2022, on West Dixie Highway — the station itself has a pedestrian bridge over West Dixie Highway. Nonstop Miami-to-Aventura service runs about 15-17 minutes, a genuinely useful option for travelers from Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, or Orlando who'd rather skip I-95 entirely.

A separate pedestrian bridge across Biscayne Boulevard, connecting the station directly to Aventura Mall, was announced in 2025 but has not been built as of Onyx's own confirmation on the route. The walk between the station and the mall today is still over a mile along Biscayne Boulevard.

Aventura Mall

The reason most visitors are here

The largest mall in Florida by retail square footage, spanning roughly 2.7-2.8 million square feet with more than 300 stores, anchored by Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, two Macy's locations, and JCPenney. Named Best Mall in the U.S. by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards in 2025.

A detail that matters more to transportation than most guides mention: roughly 9,800 parking spaces across seven garages. Valet exists but isn't the default, and during peak weekend and holiday hours (roughly December through March), self-parking can run 30 minutes or more. That's often the strongest argument for a scheduled private pickup at a designated entrance rather than circling the garage.

Where to stay

Aventura's hotel cluster

Aventura's hotel inventory is small and clusters almost entirely within a mile or two of the mall:

  • JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa — the area's flagship resort, 300 acres, two 18-hole golf courses, Tidal Cove Waterpark, and Bourbon Steak by Michael Mina. About 0.2 miles from central Aventura, roughly 2,300 feet from the mall.
  • Residence Inn and Courtyard by Marriott, Miami Aventura Mall — extended-stay and standard business-traveler options within walking distance of the mall.
  • Hilton Miami Aventura — roughly 1,600 feet from the mall entrance.
  • Aloft Miami Aventura and AC Hotel Miami Aventura — newer, design-forward properties under a mile from the mall.
  • SERENA Hotel Aventura, Tapestry Collection by Hilton — a boutique option in the same cluster.

There's no full beachfront hotel in Aventura itself — the ocean is across the Intracoastal in Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach, a separate short transfer guests sometimes assume is walkable from Aventura and isn't.

Chauffeur vs. rideshare

Three frictions a rideshare app handles poorly here

Condo tower access. Many residential towers have gated porte-cochères, valet-only drop-off, or lobby check-in that a driver unfamiliar with the building has to navigate cold.

Mall pickup zones during events and holidays. Rideshare pickup areas at Aventura Mall get congested on weekends and during the holiday season; a pre-arranged meeting point avoids a mid-pickup re-route.

Multi-stop days. Golf at Turnberry in the morning, the mall in the afternoon, dinner in Sunny Isles at night — an hourly or point-to-point private service prices and plans this more predictably than four separate rideshare fares.

None of that makes rideshare a bad option for a single mall run — it usually isn't. The distinction matters most for multi-stop days, early-morning airport departures, and any group traveling with golf clubs, strollers, or more luggage than a standard sedan trunk holds.

A typical day

Start to finish

Most Onyx guests booking a full day around Aventura follow a similar shape:

  1. Airport pickup — FLL, MIA, or PBI arrival
  2. Check-in or morning activity — JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa (golf, spa, or dropping bags)
  3. Aventura Mall — shopping and lunch
  4. Sunny Isles Beach — beach time or relaxation, a short transfer east
  5. Bal Harbour Shops — the open-air retail center just north of Sunny Isles, a common second stop
  6. Dinner and return — back to Aventura, Sunny Isles, or airport drop-off

The value of planning it this way rather than booking each leg separately is scheduling, not price: a driver who knows the JW Marriott's valet flow and the Bal Harbour Shops drop-off lane loses less time between stops than four independently dispatched rides would.

Family travel

Aventura with kids, by age

Ages 3-5

Rainbow Valley at Aventura Mall — free indoor playground for kids under 42 inches. Gorillas in the Mist splash fountain. Veterans' Park's shaded, covered section built for under-5s, plus Founders Park's seasonal splash pad. Tidal Cove Waterpark's dedicated kids' pool — confirm the resort's own age/height rules before booking.

Ages 6-10

The Aventura Slide Tower (93 ft, free, typically Fri-Sun, 50-inch minimum height). Tidal Cove Waterpark in full — lazy river, wave pool, most slides. Dezerland Park's Cadet go-kart track and ninja course (confirm current age/height rules on-site). Shaded trails at Oleta River State Park with an adult in the kayak.

Ages 10+

Dezerland's Pro go-kart track. Solo or paired kayaking and paddleboarding at Oleta River State Park. Sunny Isles Beach without toddler-pace constraints. The AMC 24-screen theater and wider dining at Aventura Mall. Bal Harbour Shops as a second, more grown-up stop.

Height and age minimums are the most common reason a family's plan changes mid-trip — Rainbow Valley, the Slide Tower, and both Dezerland go-kart tracks are all gated. Confirming the exact minimum for the kids in the car before dispatch avoids a wasted stop. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Aventura closer to Miami or Fort Lauderdale?+
Aventura is roughly equidistant in a straight line but functionally closer to Fort Lauderdale by drive time, since FLL's airport access roads see less congestion than the routes into MIA.
Can you walk from the Brightline Aventura station to the mall?+
Not comfortably. There's a pedestrian bridge over West Dixie Highway at the station itself, but the planned bridge across Biscayne Boulevard connecting the station directly to Aventura Mall has not been built. That crossing is still a walk of over a mile.
Is there a beach in Aventura?+
No. Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach, both a short drive or transfer across the Intracoastal, are the nearest beach access points.
How far is the JW Marriott Turnberry from the airports?+
Roughly 11 miles / about 20 minutes from FLL under normal traffic, and about 20 miles / 30-35 minutes from MIA — both third-party estimates, not hotel-published figures.
Is Aventura Mall parking free?+
Self-parking is free; valet and preferred parking carry a fee. Free doesn't mean fast during peak weekend and holiday hours.
Is Aventura good for a family trip with young kids?+
Yes — Aventura Mall alone has a free toddler playground (Rainbow Valley) and a free slide (50-inch height minimum), and Tidal Cove Waterpark at the JW Marriott Turnberry adds a full water-play day nearby. Founders Park and Veterans' Park cover free outdoor play.
