The geography
I-95 runs the length of Broward County along the eastern side of the city, connecting Fort Lauderdale south to Miami-Dade and north toward Palm Beach County. I-595 branches east-west, feeding directly into FLL and Port Everglades from I-95 and Florida's Turnpike. Las Olas Boulevard, the city's downtown corridor, sits just north of the airport and port complex, closer to the beach than most visitors expect.
Airport access
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) is the local airport and the default choice for most trips originating here. Miami International (MIA) is a reasonable alternative to the south for specific routes or fares. President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT, formerly PBI) to the north is closer from Fort Lauderdale than from most of Miami-Dade, and worth considering for flights out of West Palm Beach.
Trip types
Cruise transfers to Port Everglades use flight tracking when the passenger is also arriving by air that day. Cruise check-in and departure times are fixed by the cruise line, not adjustable around a delayed flight, so arriving in Fort Lauderdale the day before a sailing is generally the lower-risk plan; a same-day flight-to-ship connection can work but carries the flight's own delay risk. Corporate travel around Las Olas and downtown Fort Lauderdale runs on the same accounts used for Miami-based firms with a Broward office or client.
A note on I-95 Express Lanes
The stretch of I-95 serving Fort Lauderdale includes tolled Express Lanes alongside the free general lanes. They can meaningfully change trip timing at peak hours, and using them is a routing decision made before dispatch, not an add-on discovered mid-trip.
Getting around Fort Lauderdale
- I-95. The main north-south artery, connecting Fort Lauderdale to Miami-Dade to the south and Palm Beach County to the north.
- I-595. The direct east-west link from I-95 and Florida's Turnpike into FLL and Port Everglades — the route most airport and cruise transfers use.
- Airport and port, nearby but separate. FLL and Port Everglades sit close together but each has its own access and drop-off area — a same-day flight-to-ship connection is possible but depends on the flight landing on time.
- Las Olas Boulevard. The downtown corridor sits north of the airport-port complex, on its own local street grid rather than directly off I-595.
